SUPER HEROES COME FLYING ONTO STAMPS.(Stars)(Column) - The Post-Standard (Syracuse, NY)

Men and women with superpowers and superpersonas grace one of this year's boldest and brightest releases for the U.S. Postal Service - the DC Comics Super Heroes stamps.

Half of the pane of 20 stamps are portraits of the characters: Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Plastic Man, Supergirl, Superman and Wonder Woman.

The other 10 stamps depict covers of comic books devoted to these superheroes' exploits. The covers depicted on the stamps were published July/Aug. 1941 (Superman) to Sept. 2002 (Green Arrow).

The 39-cent stamps were issued July 20 at the world's largest comic-book and pop-culture show: Comic-Con International 2006 (www.comic-con.org ) in San Diego.

In addition to the stamps, the Postal Service issued an accompanying set of 20 stamped postal cards.

DC Comics Publisher and President Paul Levitz helped dedicate the stamps.

'The DC Comics Super Heroes have been a beloved part of America's culture for almost seven decades as the most significant characters to emerge from comic books - a true American art form,' Levitz said in a news release.

Stamps suggestions

A friendly clerk at the Teall Avenue Post Office in Syracuse had the following suggestion in regard to getting more commemoratives into the public's hands.

Why not sell sheets of special issues such as the recent Baseball Sluggers in some kind of opaque packaging?

'Then include something like the Mickey Mantle stamp just in every 100 packages or so. That would make it special, and I guarantee we'd sell more stamps.'

The idea is nothing new. For years, companies such as Topps that sell sports cards have included bonus autographed cards in every few thousand packs.
